Literary Nonfiction. Art. Illustrated by 40 color plates. Essay by William Corbett. ALBERT YORK is the first monograph on the little known but intensely admired American painter who died in 2009 at eighty-one. York showed at Manhattan's Davis & Langdale Gallery beginning in 1963 and throughout his career. His shows had good reviews; his work sold but word of his special quality has just begun to spread into the wider world. His subjects are as ordinary--cows, trees in a meadow, flowers bunched in a tomato can--as his forms and paint handling powerful. William Corbett has followed York's work for thirty-five years. He has published a book on Philip Guston, edited the letters of James Schuyler, and is a poet.

Albert York likened the world to a Garden of Eden. In his Edenic world, landscapes, people, animals and flowers are often pictured in a dreamlike context -- fascinating inventions of York's memory and imagination. York usually paints with a limited palette of greens, blues and browns. But within this hue limitation he paints with tonal beauty.

If you ever see a York painting in person, as I recently have, it invites you to come closer, to gaze and be captivated by York's vision. This book provides a similiar experience.

Albert York, the book, is small-sized, intimate, like a York painting. Inside there are 40 paintings beautifully reproduced, a representative selection of York's output, which also was small.

The book's contents are in two parts. It begins with William Corbett's introduction and four-part essay of York's life and work, including the writer's impressions of York's paintings which follow. Corbett, who I appreciate for having published this book, writes as a knowledgeable admirer of York (Corbett has also written a memoir about his artist friend, Philip Guston). While it was at first hard for me to connect to Corbett's writing style he is insightful about his subject and passionate about exposing York to a wider audience.

Albert York's paintings is why I bought the book. They ask you to do what York himself used to do, looking at paintings in books: read them.

wonderful writing, magical works
I was surprised that is a tiny booklet, not book, and very small. But the relroductions arent bad and im happy to have it and the srticle was informative. SEEMED expensive for the format
i saw this man's works for the first time in 1971 or '72. His works were rare, odd and always worth seeing. Deceptively simple, they are quietly evocative.. but of what? Perhaps this man's inner demons.

you will not find these works in the typical big city museum so buy the book and trust me, they looked like they do here.
