When a croupier is murdered on the Choctaw Gambler Riverboat Casino, State Bureau of Investigation Agent Jim Wills invites newspaper reporter Jancy Dewhurst to accompany him to the scene. The dead croupier resembles casino owner Jesse Chase, a former friend and business associate of ranching tycoon Tyrone Gideon. Tyrone's son G.C., heir apparent to the Gideon empire, has hired a man to murder Chase. G.C. ran up a debt aboard Gambler, refused to pay, and was banned from the facility. He believes the debt and his humiliation will die with his dad's old friend. Following rumors of G.C.'s spending excesses, Jancy visits G.C.'s elderly father to ask about their possible impending bankruptcy. Frail and blind, Mr. Gideon is surprised by Jancy's revelations. He has given his son a free hand with his assets, but had no idea G.C. had indebted the ranch for millions. A drunken, raging G.C. interrupts Jancy and Tyrone and orders Jancy to leave. Moments later, G.C. batters the old man, then blames Jancy for provoking him. G.C. orders Bubba Valentine, his bodyguard, to kill Jancy for meddling. He describes in detail how the nosy reporter is to die. Struggling with her contradictory desires--to settle in Bishop, Oklahoma, with Jim or to pursue her career as an overseas news correspondent--Jancy doesn't realize she's been targeted for death. She has no idea that her car being run off the road on a rainy afternoon is intentional. The danger finally becomes clear, even to her, however, when a bomb destroys her newly repaired vehicle, killing two kids who had taken it for a joy ride. With Jim's assistance, Jancy overcomes one life-threatening dilemma only to find herself mired in yet another.
Murder Aboard the Choctaw Gambler Jancy Dewhurst Mystery Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Sharon Ervin Janean Jorgensen Books in Motion Books
This is a romantic suspense novel with the emphasis on romance. Oklahoma reporter Jancy Dewhurst guards her virginity zealously as she clings to her dream of becoming a foreign correspondent. She tells OBI Agent Jim Wills, "I want to meet royalty and prime ministers and mercenaries and villains. I want to be where things happen. I want to contribute, to be valuable and important." When he replies that she's valuable and important to him, she tells him bluntly, "That isn't enough."
Maybe not, but he's definitely a roadblock on her way to fame and fortune. The author gets right to it in the first chapter, with Wills taking Jancy to a gambling boat where there's been a murder. She tries to control her raging hormones but he's a dish - biceps, shoulders, jawline, suntan, dark eyes, the works.
The Choctaw Gambler is a 4-deck replica of a paddlewheel showboat built on a permanent foundation and rigged so that water runs over the paddlewheel to make it look like it's turning. An itinerant croupier has been shot, possibly by mistake because he resembles casino owner Jesse Chase. A likely suspect is G.C Gideon, former friend and partner who owes the casino a huge debt. Playing both ends against the middle is a thug named Bubba Valentine. He's G.C.'s bodyguard and lifelong friend but handles dirty business for Chase.
While much of the action centers on Jancy's lust for Wills versus her ambition, those scenes are interwoven with crime scenes. Following a tip, Jancy discovers that G.C. has fraudulently mortgaged his father's ranch for more than a million dollars. Shortly thereafter G.C. is murdered. Murders pile up. Chase is the victim of a car bomb. Jancy's car is stolen from her mechanic's lot by a couple of teenagers out for a joy ride. When they turn the key the car explodes.
This book has a darker slant than the other two in the series and includes some thoroughly disagreeable characters. There's Angela, one of Jancy's housemates, who makes an obvious play for Wills. Another is Paul, one of Wills' brothers who pursues Jancy in a way that's more threatening than romantic.
And then there's Bubba, a complicated character. In spite of his rap sheet and basic stupidity he is almost likeable, but out of misplaced loyalty he commits a murder that beggars belief and then turns his sights on Jancy. Ervin, a former reporter who has heard everything at least once, giving her plenty of fodder for a mystery novel, says that Bubba is based on a real person and the murder is based on a real one.
One of my favorite characters is Amanda, a bright and bouncy four-year-old who adds a grace note to this tale. Another favorite is Old Blue, a genial snake that lives in the yard around the Wills family's lakeside cabin. Blue really is a character, playing a small but crucial role in the hair-raising denouement.
